POROS - Die bewaldete Insel

Nur einige Meter von der südöstlichen Küste des Regionalbezirks Argolis auf der Peloponnes entfernt liegt die malerische bewaldete Insel Poros, die eigentlich aus zwei Inseln (Kalavria und Speria) besteht, die durch einen kleinen Landstreifen verbunden sind.

Der Mythologie nach war die Insel Kalavria am Anfang dem Gott Apollon gewidmet, aber sie wurde später dem Gott Poseidon im Austausch für Delphi übergeben. Im nördlichen Teil der Insel liegen die archäologischen Überreste des Poseidontempels, der 520 v. Chr. errichtet wurde; dort beging im Jahre 322 v. Chr. der antike athenische Redner Demosthenes Selbstmord.

Poros hat zahlreiche kleine Dörfer, ruhige Sandstrände und herrliche Wanderwege. Markenzeichen der Insel ist der hohe Uhrenturm, der 1927 auf einem Hügel in der Nähe des Hafens errichtet wurde. Beeindruckende neoklassische Herrenhäuser, enge Gassen mit Bougainvilleen und niedrige zweistöckige Häuser mit gepflegten Gärten verschönern den Hafen der Insel, was besonders am Wochenende viele Besucher aus Athen und der Peloponnes anlockt.

Hier befindet sich ferner die berühmte Villa Galini (oder „das rote Haus“), ein restauriertes Herrenhaus aus dem 19. Jh., wo der beliebte griechische Dichter und Nobelpreisträger Giorgos Seferis viele Sommer verbrachte. Vier Kilometer östlich des Hafens stellt das Kloster Zoodochos Pigi ein einzigartiges Beispiel klösterlicher Architektur dar. Es stammt aus dem 18. Jh. und bietet einen wunderschönen Ausblick auf das Meer, da es eingebettet auf einem grünen Hügel liegt.

Nördlich des Poseidontempels kann man einen alten russischen Marinestützpunkt besuchen, der als historisches Denkmal gilt.

Gegenüber von Poros liegt der kleine Hafen Galatas, von dem aus ein schöner Spaziergang zum berühmten „Lemonodasos“ (Zitronenwald) führt.
