Nur durch einen dreihundert Meter breiten Meeresarm ist die Insel Poros von der Ostpeloponnes mit dem Ort Galatas getrennt. Den größten Teil der 23 km² großen Insel bildet der von Aleppo-Kiefern bedeckte und wenig bewohnte Nordteil Kalavria, während auf dem südlichen Zipfel Sferia der Hauptort Poros liegt. Hier wohnen fast alle der 4.000 Einwohner. Die beiden Inselteile sind durch einen schmalen Kanal getrennt und mit einer Brücke verbunden.
Poros-Stadt ist die Hauptsehenswürdigkeit der Insel. Malerisch ziehen sich die neoklassizistischen Häuser einen zwanzig Meter hohen Hügel hinauf, der von einem Uhrenturm gekrönt ist. Das Leben spielt sich aber entlang der langen Uferstraße ab, die von zahlreichen Cafés und Tavernen gesäumt wird. Mit kleinen Passagierbooten kann man im Viertelstundentakt aufs Festland übersetzen. Die Fährverbindungen nach Piräus sind gut, so dass die Athener gerne übers Wochenende oder zu den Feiertagen kommen.
Entlang des Südküste des nördlichen Inselteiles Kalavria gibt es zahlreiche Strände mit Hotels, etwa Askeli und Neorio. Beliebt ist der Strand bei der ehemaligen russischen Werft, von der noch Ruinen stehen. Im Osten liegt das Kloster Zoodochou Pigis, 1713 erbaut und noch von Mönchen bewirtschaftet. Im einsamen Norden befinden sich die Fundamente eines antiken Poseidon-Heiligtums, Fundstücke sind im kleinen archäologischen Museum in Poros-Stadt zu besichtigen. Der Meeresarm zur Peloponnes ist als geschützter Liegeplatz bei Seglern sehr beliebt.
